Morgan Freeman plays Eddie “Scrap Iron” Dupris, a former fighter trained by Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood). Dupris works for Frankie in his gym after having suffered a severe injury in his last fight, something Frankie feels responsible for.

One evening, Dupris is closing up the gym and finds Maggie (Hilary Swank) working late, dedicated to putting in all the extra hours she can to improve her boxing skills. He is touched by her devotion and sees something in her that Frankie hasn’t yet. Dupris observes:
